History of MAPS
Founded in 1986, the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit research and educational organization. Over the years, MAPS has made significant strides in the field of psychedelic research and education, raising over $140 million. The organization has hosted the largest gathering of the Psychedelic Renaissance and announced Psychedelic Science 2025, the fifth and largest psychedelic conference in history.
Psychedelic Research and Therapy
MAPS sponsors the world’s most advanced psychedelic-assisted therapy research. It has completed two observational studies on the long-term effects of ibogaine treatment at centers in Mexico and New Zealand. MAPS has also submitted a New Drug Application to the FDA for MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD. Additionally, MAPS published results from the first study of LSD therapy in over 40 years and conducted the first double-blind, placebo-controlled study of therapeutic use of LSD in humans since the 1970s.
Educational and Advocacy Initiatives
MAPS is dedicated to advocating for the dignity and rights of all people who use drugs. The organization has developed a diverse network of clinics and therapists to ensure accessibility to psychedelic treatment. They have awarded $410,000 in tuition scholarships to more than 100 trainees, prioritizing Black, Indigenous, and practitioners of color. MAPS has also partnered with the City and County of Denver to train first responders in psychedelic crisis assessment and intervention.
Harm Reduction and Public Benefit Projects
MAPS has incubated The Zendo Project, a leader in psychedelic harm reduction, and Lykos Therapeutics, a drug-development public benefit company. These initiatives reflect MAPS' commitment to safety and public health in the context of psychedelic use. The organization has also reintroduced its Fiscal Sponsorship Program to support grassroots organizations within the psychedelic movement.
Recognition and Transparency
MAPS has earned notable recognition for its work, including the Guidestar Platinum Seal of Transparency and a 4-Star Rating from Charity Navigator. These accolades underscore the organization's commitment to ethical practices and effective management. They also highlight the trust and credibility MAPS has built within the community and among stakeholders.
